A more critical article, discussing the CR Diet and its relationship to anorexia and psychological effects, written by a former anorexic.

Follow-Up

In light of this really interesting discussion about the CR diet, eating disorders and nutrition, I am feeling unusually thankful for my super yummy lunch today: grilled halibut, grilled asparagus and pasta.

Interestingly, I was feeling a bit this way to start with, as I'm just reading a book about the Mennonites who came over from Russia and the hardship they endured when they arrived in North America. I take stuff for granted too much.

Conclusion: food is a good thing.

The CR Diet

[info]audrawilliams posted this article about The Calorie Restriction Diet.

I had this to say:

I've read a couple of articles on this and am left with very mixed feelings.

I don't know. Medically it seems to not be hurtful as they are putting an immense amount of effort into making sure what they eat is balanced and nutritionally sound. Based on that, I don't necessarily feel that I can judge the choice to do this.

But I can't help but still get that really distasteful suggestion of anorexia, of weighing and measuring everything that goes into your mouth and being extremely, scarily thin.

Another article I read focused on one individual who had done it for a very long time, and the strong feeling I got from him was that he was just really, really scared of death. And I don't think fear is ever a good motivator to do anything.

And the hedonist in me doesn't understand how someone could possibly want to give up all the pleasure of food. Great wine, dark chocolate, and let's not forget the bliss that is cheese... It kind of seems like choosing to give up sunshine or sex or any of the other great things in life that could potentially kill you, but that doesn't mean you cut yourself off from them, you just make smart choices about how you experience them. You might live longer on this diet, but will definitely have a lot less pleasure... and that just seems foolish.
