Project: Baby Week 18

  • May. 5th, 2008 at 5:37 PM

There's this strange thing happening right now... I can feel my center of gravity shifting. Like, I'll get out of bed in the morning, and I'm conscious of this extreme WEIRDNESS about how I'm standing... like it's just wrong in some way. And then I get on with my day and mostly forget about it.

I also notice it in bed when I'm lying on one side, and want to flip over -- my first thought before flipping over is that I sort of have to "prepare" myself to do it. Almost like it's a strain in some way, although it's not really. It's just... different. And it's throwing me for a bit of a loop.

There's also this strange "strained" feeling happening in my abs... I can feel them stretching, I think, or being pushed out. It feels exactly like I can imagine it would feel if someone put both hands against your abdominal wall and pushed out. So strange, and not very comfortable.

I had a midwives appointment today, and got to hear the heartrate again... 150 BPM. I also talked to her about this weird pain I've been getting sporadically in my ribcage. She said it was unusual to get it this early, but it could be costal condritis, or it may just have to do with organs and whatnot being pushed around in there. We agreed that it seems muscular in nature, and she mentioned that someone had been in there the week previously with exactly the same symptoms. That particular woman tried the chiropractor, massage, and everything else and basically was eventually told that all that would help it was delivering the baby. Awesome. *eye roll*

I had best luck with random stabby pains caused by baby with a heat-pack on the area and some gentle stretching.

And it is a weird feeling as your uterus swells, isn't it? Wait until third trimester when you've got a basket-ball shoved up your shirt and you feel like you can put your hand on the skin and it feels as if you've got your hand on a balloon and it's being blown up. Sure, it's just an illusion, but it was a pretty damn persuasive one. Heh.

Be careful about climbing on chairs/ladders etc. Because your centre of gravity is shifting, and that can be a pain to accommodate for. It's why pregnant women tend to be so clumsy. Try and get to the pool... swimming is wonderful for getting rid of that "clunky" feel.

I didn't really have that experience with centre of gravity shifting...it sounds strange though. If you think flipping is an ordeal now..just wait until you're near the end. For me to flip at this point I have to hold onto my belly to support it and then scooch myself onto my side. I did find out it was ok to be on my back as long as a pillow was shoved under the left or right side so I'm not flat on my back...it's relief when your hips are killing you!

As for that pain you are feeling...ligaments are being stretched in that area. I experienced the same thing. One day it was so bad that I could barely walk...everything is just loosening and getting stretched out so baby and uterus can grow:)

I know and I really feel for you! Just sit and watch tv and eat some ice cream. It makes it all better. And now is definitely when you can get away with being waited on hand and foot 24/7 ;)

There were a couple of times when I completely randomly fell over due to centre-of-gravity weirdness. Hilarious!

Hey you are coming up on halfway, how cool is that?
